Why data science? While working as a software developer, one of my tasks was to build systems that ingest data from users and store them in meaningful ways. While it began as a simple database model with straightforward dependencies, the structure became more complex as the requirements evolved and the data was being stored to make future predictions based on the information gathered. It peaked my interest into how we could gather insights from the raw and complex data that was going to be stored in the system every day.
Using computational tools to convert raw data into meaningful pieces of information for use in fields as varied as banking and biology has given rise to a whole new field, one that is interested in new and efficient ways to solve problems, and I want to be a part of that.
Research and Career Interests: As we progress towards an increasingly computerized future, and as machines become smarter and more efficient, we are presented with newer and more powerful ways to solve problems that we could not before. For example, machine learning can not only be used to give you recommendations on your next purchase, it can help recommend how to smartly distribute food grains in a country where many people depend on government benefits to survive and it is already being used to help detect fraud and predict risks in financial markets.
I am interested in data science because it helps me understand and apply tools like logistic regression, text mining, artificial intelligence and data visualization to give useful and valuable solutions to diverse sets of problems that lie at the intersection of technology and society.
