Rich Nguyen holds a dual appointment as an Assistant Professor by Courtesy in the School of Data Science and as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science. His research interests include biological image analysis, machine learning, and Computer Science education innovation.
Nguyen teaches courses on machine learning and the design and analysis of algorithms. He is passionate about connecting and inspiring students and innovating the computer science education field. Prior to joining the School of Data Science and Department of Computer Science in 2018, Nguyen worked as the Career Manager for the University of North Carolina College of Computing and Informatics. There, in 2018, he was awarded with the Faculty Innovation Fund. Currently at UVA, Nguyen teaches courses on the introduction to machine learning, computing professional seminars, and the design and analysis of algorithms. He recently wrote a grant to launch a teacher-empowered program to make a state-wide impact on integrating computational thinking into high school curriculum which resulted in a digital dissemination of CodeNC.org.
Nguyen holds a Ph.D. in Computing and Information Systems from UNC Charlotte, an M.S. in Computer Science from UNC Charlotte, and a B.S. in Computer Science from UNC Charlotte.
