Q: When and how did you become interested in data science?

I minored in data analytics in undergrad because I liked that it was a quantitative way to study human behavior. I also appreciated how many different applications there are. After I graduated, I worked as a data analyst for Ubisoft on a first-person shooter game, which was a very unexpected application for me!

Q: Choosing a doctoral program is a big decision. Why did you choose UVA's Ph.D. in Data Science?

UVA's 4+1 approach to data science is novel and necessary. The school philosophy is embedded in everyone, despite coming from such different backgrounds. The result is a thoughtful and articulate community that I could not pass up.

Q: What areas of research interest you and why?

Algorithm fairness and transparency, civic technology.

Q: What do you hope to do with your data science degree?

I hope to use my data science expertise to make systematic change that drives equity. Whether that be through designing algorithms to be more equitable, building civic technology, or something I have yet to learn.

Q: What advice would you give to prospective students considering a Ph.D. in Data Science?  What do you wish you had known before starting?

Don't compare your journey to anyone else's. Our diversity in backgrounds, education, and professional experience is what makes the school special. A Ph.D. in Data Science is for you if you decide it is!

Q: What are your initial impressions of the school, faculty, and other students?

Friendly, engaging, and passionate.

Q: What is a fun fact about yourself?

I once backpacked for a month in the High Sierras.
