M.S. in Data Science 2023, University of Virginia
B.S. in Computer Science 2021, James Madison University

Q: Tell us about your path to data science.

During my undergrad at James Madison University, I worked as a front-end software developer for two years. It was a great way to strengthen my programming skills but during my senior year, I wanted to learn what else I could do with my degree outside of web development. I also wanted to revisit my interest in geographic information systems and data visualization, both of which were topics I explored in non-computer science electives. Data science seemed like the next logical step for me!

Q: What do you hope to do with a data science degree?

I am hoping to pursue a career in geospatial analysis and am especially looking forward to taking a geographical information system elective this spring! That said, data science has many facets that I have yet to explore, so I am sure to find my niche during the program.

Q: What has surprised you about the MSDS program so far?

I've enjoyed getting to know my classmates and their paths to data science. They come from many different academic and professional backgrounds, some of which are very surprising! From psychology minors to theater majors, consultants to high school teachers, we all found our way to data science.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a master’s in data science?

If you're not sure about what data science is or whether it's the right academic path, there are a lot of free crash course videos online. Check them out and see if it feels right for you! I recommend Coursera and Udemy. Check them out and see if it feels right for you!

Q: What are some fun facts about yourself?

  • I almost studied agriculture while an undergrad.
  • One day, my dream is to live on a small farm and own cows.
  • Until then, I volunteer at an animal sanctuary back home!
