Meet the M.S. in Data Science, Residential Class of 2023
The School of Data Science welcomed 66 students to the M.S. in Data Science, Residential Class of 2023. They bring a wide diversity of backgrounds and experiences to the full-time program and spent their first week in new student and technical orientation activities getting to know their faculty and classmates, exploring Grounds, and gearing up for the 11-month master's program.
This year's applicant pool was competitive, and the mid-80% undergraduate GPA was 3.1-4.0. The 66 students represent 33 undergraduate institutions and over 20 undergraduate majors. 47% of the class earned their bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia. Five students are MSDS/MBA dual degree candidates and three are MSDS/GSAS-PhD fellows.
The MSDS Residential program continues to see a strong turnout of women, with 52% of this year's class female. 14% of the class are international hailing from 10 countries outside of the United States, and 10% of the class are underrepresented minorities.
Orientation day kicked off June 13 led by the Student Affairs and Academic Operations teams. Activities included an introduction to graduate and career resources at the University of Virginia, a scavenger hunt, a leadership assessment, a wellness presentation, and networking reception.
