Ph.D. in Data Science
The School of Data Science is committed to reporting student outcomes in a way that is responsible, accurate, and aligned with NACE First Destinations Reporting Standards. NACE guidelines require a minimum of three graduates with known career outcomes before publishing aggregated statistics. The Ph.D. in Data Science was launched in 2022 and graduating classes to date have been small. As the program grows, we anticipate an increase in the number of graduates and with it, the volume and diversity of carer outcomes.
Across the 2024 and 2025 graduating cohorts, five students completed the Ph.D. in Data Science. Graduates have moved into impactful roles across academia, industry, and government. Their work spans applied machine learning, research, data science, and service to national missions. Highlights from our first Ph.D. alumni include:
- Serving as a full-time data scientist with the U.S. Air Force, applying advanced analytical and computational approaches to support active-duty priorities;
- Working as a data scientist within an academic research team at the University of Virginia, advancing machine learning methods to address complex challenges in healthcare delivery and clinical decision-making;
- Joining Microsoft in Seattle as an applied scientist, contributing to research and development efforts in large scale machine learning and AI technologies; and
- Serving as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force, supporting analytical, technical, and leadership needs within the service.
These early outcomes reflect the breadth of opportunities available to our Ph.D. in Data Science students, from high-impact research roles in academia to applied machine learning careers in major technology companies and service-oriented positions in federal agencies. As additional cohorts graduate, we will continue to expand our reporting and provide prospective students with an increasingly detailed picture of career pathways.
