Why pursue a Ph.D. in Data Science?

One of the facets of data science that currently excites me the most is its potential for forecasting. Consider, for instance, the ability to forecast the gradual deterioration along coastal shore lines or the ability to unravel the intricate web of social and economic ramifications resulting from organizational decisions. As data science continues to establish itself as an academic discipline, it promises to shed some light on the intricate interplay within complex systems and, in turn, offer the prospect to make more informed decisions.
