For Hannah Valenty, the journey from studying the laws of physics to harnessing the power of data was sparked by curiosity and a call to make an impact. After diving into particle physics research and mastering high-dimensional datasets, she realized data science wasn’t just a tool — it was a gateway to solving real-world problems.

Now in the MS. in Data Science (MSDS) residential program at the University, Hannah is blending her love for discovery with a deep passion for conservation, using data to tell stories that inspire change. In this Q&A, Hannah shares her journey, inspirations, and advice for anyone looking to turn their passion for data into real-world impact.

Q: Tell us about your path to data science.

I started performing particle physics research following my freshman year at Duquesne University. That was when, with my mentor and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab), I was first exposed to Python, statistical modelling, and data analysis techniques.

While dealing with high-dimensional datasets over the next three years, I found myself enjoying the process of uncovering meaningful relationships in the data. I loved learning about the physical principles of the universe, but I recognized the applicability of data science techniques to unlimited disciplines. This realization sparked my decision to jump into the world of data!

Q: What do you hope to do with a M.S. in Data Science degree?

I am passionate about environmental preservation and conservation. I hope to learn many analysis techniques to apply to natural issues and benefit non-profits or organizations that specialize in my interests. I aim to not only implement technical skills but also my capability to tell a story with data as a call to action.

Q: What has surprised you about the MSDS program so far?

It was surprising yet encouraging to meet so many classmates with a wide variety of undergraduate degrees. Having perspectives from many disciplines has been great for collaboration and interesting to hear everyone’s personal stories.

Q: What has been your favorite class so far and why?

I would pick Prince Afriyie’s course, Linear Models for Data Science. I love math, so getting to physically write down equations in my notebook made me enjoy the content even more.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a Master’s in Data Science?

Think about what aspects of data science are drawing you in and see if the program fulfills those aspirations. Don’t be afraid to pivot from a path you may be on now, it's never too late. Consider picking some electives that would build your data science skills, and make sure to check out the prerequisites!

Q: What are some fun facts about yourself?

I have a twin brother named Joe (he’s older), I rowed during undergrad, and as someone from Pittsburgh, you could call me a Yinzer
