Caroline Kranefuss transitioned from a small college, where she studied physics, to the University of Virginia's Master of Data Science (MSDS) in person, residential program. Despite initial concerns about attending a larger university, Kranefuss quickly found an incredibly tight-knit group of peers and began developing relationships with professors both within and outside of data science.
Her journey reflects a commitment to research, a love of the natural world, and a growing role as a leader in the School of Data Science and beyond.
Q: Tell us about your path to Data Science.
I've always been fascinated by the way math explains the world and am drawn to its practical applications. I majored in physics at Bowdoin College before landing at Gentuity, LLC, as a data analyst, where I fell in love with the field.
Q: What do you hope to do with a Data Science Master's Degree?
I currently conduct research in the environmental science department alongside my coursework. My lab studies the development of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to identify robust signals of a changing climate under net-zero scenarios. After graduating, I hope to work on the data team of an environmentally minded organization using the advanced skills I've gained in this program.
Q: What has surprised you about the MSDS program so far?
I've been pleasantly surprised by how accessible the professors are. I went to a very small college and was used to being able to stop by my professors' offices, send an email, or attend office hours on a regular basis and wasn't sure if my experience would be different at such a big school as UVA.
Because the School of Data Science is so tightly knit, however, I have had an amazing experience getting to know and work with professors here — and in other UVA departments!
Q: What are you involved in outside of class?
I volunteer with the Piedmont Environmental Council, an organization that promotes responsible land management and protects the local Albemarle County environment.
I also started and run the Data Science Run Club and participate in the Graduate Student Run Club. I love to stay busy, but coursework always comes first.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a Master’s in Data Science?
I will share valuable advice from a mentor: Make sure that obtaining a graduate degree is something you feel passionate about — not just an available path in a bad labor market. It's rewarding and so worth it, but difficult and a full commitment, so doing it without passion and intention can make it really hard.
This valuable advice has helped make my master's a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Also, AI does not replace critical thinking and understanding concepts deeply.
I know there are concerns about a master's being worth it given the proliferation of generative AI, but I personally feel that the comprehensive knowledge and skills I'm gaining at UVA are 100% valuable — and marketable in this tough job landscape!
Q: What are some fun facts about yourself?
- I speak four languages (some better than others).
- I took classes in 13 different academic departments as part of my undergraduate degree.
My hobbies include watercolor painting and embroidery.
